Technical screen

The interviewers want to see structured thinking. Start by clarifying the problem. Form hypotheses. Identify what data you'd need. Walk through your analysis plan. And — critically — demonstrate that you understand the specific dynamics of TikTok's platform. A generic answer about "engagement metrics" won't cut it. An answer that considers the interplay between creator incentives, algorithm behavior, and consumer retention will.
Experimentation and causal inference

Demonstrating awareness of this kind of interference — even at a conceptual level — signals that you've thought about the platform beyond surface-level metrics.
Machine learning
For teams focused on recommendation, ads, or applied AI, expect a dedicated ML round that goes deeper than the technical screen. This might cover model architecture choices, training and evaluation strategies, feature engineering at scale, or discussion of tradeoffs between model complexity and interpretability.
For analytics-focused roles, ML is less central but still present. You should be comfortable discussing when and why you'd use ML versus simpler approaches, and how to evaluate whether a model is actually adding value.
What actually matters
TikTok's interview is looking for data scientists who combine technical rigor with product intuition — specifically, product intuition about how recommendation-driven platforms work. The candidates who stand out are the ones who demonstrate that they understand TikTok as a system: creators, consumers, and the algorithm forming a feedback loop that creates the product experience.
Before your interview, spend time thinking about TikTok's product at a systems level. What signals drive the recommendation algorithm? How do creator incentives affect content supply? What does "healthy engagement" mean on a platform where the algorithm controls most of the content distribution? If you can reason about these questions thoughtfully, the case studies will feel natural.
