How Data Science Interviews Work at Meta

A detailed breakdown of Meta's data science interview process — what each round tests, how to prepare, and where most candidates fall short.

If you're interviewing for a data science role at Meta, here's the first thing you need to understand: Meta doesn't hire data scientists to build models. They hire data scientists to be the analytical brain of a product team. The interview is designed to test exactly that — can you use data to drive product decisions?

That distinction matters because it shapes the entire interview process. Every round is oriented around product analytics. If you're expecting a machine learning showcase, you're preparing for the wrong company.

The process at a glance

Meta's data science interview typically takes four to six weeks from first recruiter contact to offer. The structure looks like this:

A recruiter screen (30 minutes) to talk through your background and make sure there's mutual fit. A technical screen (45-60 minutes) run by a senior data scientist, usually focused on SQL and product analytics fundamentals. And then a full onsite loop of four interviews, each 45 minutes, covering the core competency areas Meta cares about.

The onsite is where the real evaluation happens. Let's break down what each round actually looks like.

SQL and data analysis

Meta's SQL round is live — you'll write queries on a shared coding environment (typically CoderPad) while the interviewer watches. The questions are grounded in product context, not abstract puzzles. Think: "Write a query to find the percentage of users who posted a Story within 7 days of creating an account, segmented by acquisition channel."

You'll need strong command of joins, aggregations, window functions, and date/time manipulation. But correctness isn't the only thing being evaluated. Interviewers pay attention to how you structure your queries, whether you communicate your logic as you write, and whether you can interpret what the results mean once the query runs.

A common pattern in Meta SQL interviews is the follow-up. You write a query, and then the interviewer pivots: "Okay, now you see that organic signups have a 40% higher Story adoption rate than paid. What do you think is going on? What would you look at next?" The SQL is the setup. The product conversation is the actual test.

Product sense

This is Meta's signature round, and it's where the most candidates get tripped up. You'll be given an open-ended product scenario — often tied to a real Meta product like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, or Marketplace — and asked to reason through it analytically.

The prompts vary, but common formats include: "How would you measure the success of Instagram Reels?", "Facebook Groups engagement is down — how would you investigate?", or "We're thinking about adding a tipping feature to Facebook Live. How would you evaluate whether it's worth building?"

What the interviewer is looking for: Can you define the right metrics? Can you distinguish between a primary success metric and guardrail metrics? Do you think about tradeoffs — not just "does engagement go up" but "does engagement go up without hurting content quality or cannibalizing other surfaces?" Can you articulate what you'd actually measure and why?

The biggest mistake candidates make here is listing metrics without prioritizing them. "We'd track DAU, WAU, MAU, time spent, sessions, likes, comments, shares..." That's a dashboard, not a framework. Meta wants you to pick a north star metric, defend it, and then explain what guardrails you'd put around it. That requires product intuition, not just analytical chops.

Analytical execution

This round tests your statistical reasoning in the context of product analytics. You might be asked about experiment design, sample sizing, interpreting A/B test results, or diagnosing why a metric moved.

The questions tend to be more conceptual than computational. Rather than "calculate the p-value," expect "you ran an A/B test on a new notification system and Treatment shows a 3% lift in DAU, but the p-value is 0.08. What do you do?" Or: "You're designing an experiment for a change to News Feed ranking. What are the key design decisions you need to make?"

Meta values statistical intuition over formula memorization. Can you reason about what could go wrong with an experiment? Do you understand why a significant result might not be trustworthy, or why a non-significant result might still be meaningful? Can you connect your statistical reasoning back to a product decision?

At senior levels (IC5+), this round gets harder. You'll face more complex experimental designs, questions about causal inference in observational settings, and scenarios where you need to demonstrate that you can handle ambiguity — not just solve well-defined problems.

Behavioral

Meta's behavioral round evaluates collaboration, communication, and influence. The questions are standard behavioral format — "Tell me about a time when..." — but they're calibrated to Meta's specific values.

Expect questions about situations where you influenced a product decision with data, resolved a disagreement with a cross-functional partner, navigated ambiguity on a project, or drove impact beyond your immediate team. Senior candidates will get deeper probing on leadership, mentorship, and strategic influence.

The key here is specificity. Meta interviewers want concrete examples with clear impact — not vague stories about "working well with stakeholders." Have three to four strong stories prepared that cover collaboration, impact, handling ambiguity, and disagreement. Practice telling each one in under three minutes.

How leveling works

Most experienced hires interview at IC4 (mid-level) or IC5 (senior). The interview structure is the same across levels — what changes is the evaluation bar.

At IC4, interviewers are looking for solid analytical execution and the ability to work independently on well-scoped problems. At IC5, the bar shifts toward handling ambiguity, driving strategic projects, and demonstrating influence beyond your immediate team. The jump from IC4 to IC5 is meaningful, and getting downleveled after interviewing for IC5 is not uncommon.

What actually matters

If I had to boil Meta's interview down to a single sentence: they want data scientists who think like product managers and communicate like consultants, but with the technical depth to back it up.

SQL fluency is table stakes. Statistical reasoning is expected. But the thing that separates strong candidates from borderline ones is product sense — the ability to take a vague business question, figure out what to measure, decide what the data means, and make a recommendation. That's the job at Meta, and that's what the interview is built to evaluate.

Prepare accordingly. Don't spend three weeks on LeetCode and two days on product sense. Flip that ratio.
