How Data Science Interviews Work at Lyft

A detailed breakdown of Lyft's data science interview process — why there are two distinct tracks, how the marketplace shapes every question, and what each round actually tests.

Lyft's data science organization is split into two distinct tracks, and the interview process diverges depending on which one you're interviewing for. Decision Scientists focus on helping humans make decisions — think product analytics, business strategy, and frameworks that drive alignment on what to build. Algorithm Scientists focus on helping machines make decisions — models that power production systems like pricing, matching, and ETAs.

Both tracks share a foundation (SQL, stats, experimentation), but the later rounds are different. If you don't know which track your role falls under, ask your recruiter before you start prepping. Preparing for the wrong one is a waste of time.

The process at a glance

Lyft's interview typically takes three to four weeks — faster than most peers. The structure consists of six rounds: a recruiter screen, a technical phone screen, and four onsite rounds covering product sense, live coding, experimentation or ML (depending on your track), and a behavioral round.

Six rounds sounds like a lot, but each one is focused and well-defined. You know what you're being evaluated on in each session, which means you can prepare specifically rather than guessing.

Technical phone screen

The phone screen is the same for both tracks. It covers SQL, basic statistics, and analytical reasoning. The SQL is practical — expect joins, aggregations, window functions, and questions grounded in Lyft's business context (rides, drivers, market dynamics). The stats questions are conceptual: how would you design an experiment? What's a p-value? When would you be concerned about multiple comparisons?

This round filters for baseline competence. If you're fluent in SQL and comfortable with foundational statistics, you'll pass. The phone screen isn't trying to differentiate between good and great — that happens in the onsite.

Onsite: product sense

Both tracks get a product sense round, and it's grounded in Lyft's marketplace. Expect scenarios like: "Ride cancellations are up in a specific market — what's going on?" or "How would you measure the success of a new rider loyalty program?" or "We're considering changing how we price shared rides. What should we measure?"

Lyft is a two-sided marketplace (riders and drivers), and every product question has implications for both sides. If ride cancellations are up, is it a rider problem (can't find drivers, prices too high) or a driver problem (canceling because rides are unprofitable or inconvenient)? When you evaluate a loyalty program, does it help rider retention without hurting driver economics?

The strongest answers demonstrate marketplace fluency. You don't need to know Lyft's internal metrics, but you should understand the fundamental dynamics: supply and demand, pricing elasticity, geographic variation, and the feedback loops between rider experience and driver supply.

Onsite: live coding

The coding round uses the language of your choice, though SQL is typical for the product (Decision Science) track and Python is more common for the algorithm track.

For the product track, the SQL is more complex than the phone screen — multi-step queries, messy data scenarios, and questions that require you to make judgment calls about how to handle edge cases. The emphasis is on practical analytical fluency: can you work through a real-world data problem quickly and correctly?

For the algorithm track, the Python round leans toward data manipulation, light algorithmic work, and practical coding — not competitive programming. You might implement a simple model, process a dataset, or write a function that solves a business-relevant problem.

Onsite: experimentation (product track) or ML (algorithm track)

This is where the tracks diverge.

Product track — experimentation: This round goes deep on A/B testing, experiment design, and causal reasoning. Expect questions about how to design experiments in a marketplace (where interference between riders and drivers is a real problem), how to interpret results that conflict across segments, and when experiments aren't the right tool. Lyft's marketplace creates the same experimental challenges as Uber and DoorDash: spillover effects, geographic clustering, and shared supply. Demonstrating awareness of these challenges — and knowing about methods like switchback experiments or difference-in-differences — will set you apart.

Algorithm track — machine learning: This round covers model design, feature engineering, evaluation metrics, and production considerations. Expect questions about the models that power Lyft's core systems: pricing, ETA estimation, matching riders to drivers, demand forecasting. The questions are applied, not theoretical — how would you build this model, what data would you need, how would you evaluate it, and what would you do when it breaks?

Behavioral

Lyft's behavioral round covers collaboration, handling ambiguity, and driving impact. The questions are standard behavioral format, but the context is marketplace-specific. Stories about working with cross-functional teams, making decisions with incomplete data, and influencing product direction will resonate.

Lyft values pragmatism and velocity. Stories where you made a good-enough decision quickly and iterated will land better than stories where you spent months perfecting an analysis.

What actually matters

Lyft's interview is well-structured and track-specific, which is a gift if you prepare for it correctly. Know your track, understand the marketplace dynamics, and prepare accordingly.

For the product track: SQL, product sense, and experimentation are the core. Make sure your experimentation knowledge goes beyond textbook A/B testing to include marketplace-specific complications. For the algorithm track: Python, ML, and systems thinking are the core. Make sure you can discuss models in the context of production systems, not just notebooks.

Both tracks reward marketplace fluency. Spend time understanding how a rideshare marketplace works — the dynamics between rider demand, driver supply, pricing, and geography. The more naturally you can reason about these dynamics, the more fluid your interview answers will be.
