How Data Science Interviews Work at DoorDash

DoorDash interviews differently than most tech companies, and the reason is structural: it's a three-sided marketplace. Every product decision affects consumers, merchants, and Dashers — often in competing ways. A change that's great for consumers (faster delivery) might be terrible for Dashers (more pressure, less pay per order). A promotion that drives merchant volume might tank unit economics.
If you interview at DoorDash and treat it like a generic analytics interview, you're going to have a rough time. The interviewers want to see that you can reason about tradeoffs across all three sides of the marketplace simultaneously. That lens shows up in every round.
The process at a glance
DoorDash's data science interview typically takes three to six weeks and consists of four to six rounds. The structure: a recruiter screen, a technical screen (usually 60 minutes, often split into two parts), and a multi-round onsite.
The technical screen is where DoorDash filters hard. It's denser than most companies' initial screens — you might get four to six SQL questions plus a product case, all in one hour. If that sounds like a lot, it is. Pace matters here.
SQL and analytics
DoorDash leans heavily on SQL in their interviews. The technical screen typically includes multiple SQL questions covering joins, CTEs, window functions, and time-based analysis. The questions aren't tricky in the LeetCode sense — they're grounded in realistic business scenarios. Think: delivery time analysis, order completion rates, cohort retention across customer segments.
What's worth noting is that some candidates report DoorDash allows access to documentation during the SQL round. This shifts the evaluation away from memorization and toward problem-solving speed and query structure. Can you translate a business question into a correct, readable query quickly? That's the test.
During the onsite, you'll face additional SQL and analytics rounds that go deeper. These might involve messier scenarios — ambiguous requirements, datasets that require cleaning assumptions, or multi-step analyses where the first query informs the second.
Product and business case

That three-sided framing is what separates strong DoorDash candidates from generic ones. Every time you propose a metric or a hypothesis, ask yourself: "What does this look like from the consumer side? The merchant side? The Dasher side?" If your answer only addresses one, it's incomplete.
Experimentation
DoorDash takes experimentation seriously, and their interview reflects it. The experimentation round goes beyond standard A/B testing — you'll need to understand the specific complications that arise in marketplace experiments.
The core challenge: in a marketplace, treating one group differently creates spillover effects. If you give a subset of Dashers higher base pay in an experiment, that changes their availability, which affects delivery times for all consumers in the area — including those in the control group. Standard randomization assumptions break down.
Expect questions about switchback experiments (randomizing by time period rather than by user), difference-in-differences, and synthetic controls. You don't need to be an expert in all of these methods, but you need to understand why simple A/B tests can give misleading results in a marketplace context and what the alternatives are.
You should also be comfortable with practical tradeoffs in experiment design: how long to run a test, how to handle regional variation, what to do when results conflict across segments, and when an experiment isn't the right tool at all.
Behavioral
DoorDash's behavioral round covers the usual territory — collaboration, conflict resolution, impact — but with an emphasis on how you operate in cross-functional environments. Data scientists at DoorDash work closely with product, engineering, and operations teams, and the interviewers want evidence that you can translate between those worlds.

SQL fluency is necessary but not sufficient. What really matters is whether you can think like someone who understands how a marketplace works — not in the abstract, but in the specific context of DoorDash's business.
